Coming from the midwest, I rarely found my “less is more” style in the St. Petersburg, FL area when shopping in the boutiques. That’s when I decided to open my own brick and mortar to see if there were others in the area who shared that same aesthetic…an easy, sophisticated style that focuses on well crafted goods from authentic makers.
Plain Jane’s apparel brands are chosen for their quality workmanship, soft fabrics and muted colors. Most of the small artisan pieces are discovered while shopping in cities like Denver, San Francisco, Portland, Malibu and San Diego which lend a West Coast vibe to the shop. Buying from small, independent artists just feels good and the quality and attention to detail far exceeds what’s found in mass produced lines. Some clothing lines are made in the USA too…another “feel good” for customers. We just celebrated our two year anniversary and we plan to always be an evolution of brands to keep the shop feeling fresh and unique to our loyal customers.
St. Pete has recently undergone a renaissance, transforming from a sleepy retirement community to a hip urban hot spot. City dwellers young and old bring a cool, hip attitude to this thriving metro and Plain Jane is thrilled to be part of this transformation.
While reflecting on what to name my shop I remembered being called a “plain jane” in high school for dressing more tomboy than prom queen. Not many other girls were wearing Adidas sneakers in the late 70’s! So, when opening my own lifestyle boutique with a simple, almost tomboy aesthetic, I knew that name captured the right feel and made the most sense.
What excites me the most about being a small business owner is being able to work one on one with customers…getting to know them like a friend and really thinking about their wardrobe or gift needs while buying for the store. I hope that our customers find Plain Jane to be a welcoming environment with helpful, friendly advice that’s always thoughtful and genuine.
With much love,
